Because of a personal conflict with Beria, scientist Mikhail Rubin ended up in a labor camp. Several years later, in August 1945, Mikhail is unexpectedly released—his fellow scientist Kirill Muromtsev recommended him for work on a highly important project. After the Americans drop an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, the Soviet authorities decide to urgently create a Soviet atomic bomb, and Rubin and Muromtsev must work together on its development. The collaboration between the two longtime friends is complicated by a personal drama: while Mikhail was imprisoned, Kirill married his beloved Anna.
