This is the story of a village boy named Flyora, who lives in a small Belarusian village and dreams of joining a partisan detachment. Only his younger brother and mother remain in his family, and she will not let him go to war. Among trenches covered with sand, he finds an old, slightly rusted carbine, with which he runs away in search of the resistance. The sixteen-year-old teenager tries with all his might to be an adult, but only provokes laughter from seasoned soldiers. Soon, he finds himself under bombardment by enemy bombers for the first time, and temporarily loses his hearing. He is assigned to procure food in the company of two adult partisans: this is how he becomes a witness to horrific Nazi raids, the murder of small children, and genocide. From an uncouth and hot-blooded youth, Flyora turns into a young man in appearance, but deep down an old man, gray-haired at heart.
