The investigation into the murder of a small-time black marketeer named Viktor Korablev leads two KGB officers—seasoned Colonel Seregin and his young subordinate Pavlov—to the trail of a major criminal gang. The murder was connected to an attempt to smuggle antique jewelry known as Charlotte’s Necklace out of the Soviet Union. As they gradually unravel the strange and mysterious circumstances of the crime, the KGB officers uncover an entire criminal network operating throughout the Union and in numerous foreign countries. This is a case of international масштаба. Will the two investigators have the skills and ability to stand up to a vast and intricately organized criminal enterprise? Will they become the next victims of Korablev’s ruthless killers, or have bigger fish already taken an interest in them?
