What should a woman do when she learns that her husband is cheating on her: catch him in the act or try to find out the reasons behind what is happening? This is precisely the question faced by Rosalind, the main character of the movie. Fortunately, a mutual acquaintance of the spouses and a family friend offers an unconventional solution to the problem, albeit unintentionally. Falke decides to play a joke on the marriage that is falling apart and persuades the maid Adele, who dreams of becoming an actress, to play a prank on his friend and charm him. He gives the girl an invitation to a masquerade ball and presents her with a “bat” costume. The wife, meanwhile, decides to compete with the maid and, behind a mask, make her own husband fall in love with her.
