Andrei and Veniamin are old friends and heavenly lawyers. Their task is to assess the lives of deceased souls and decide where they should go next: to the “sector of peace,” resembling earthly notions of paradise, or to the “sector of reflection,” where a soul will be forced to atone for every bad deed it has committed. The protagonists have been doing this kind of work for a long time, but when Andrei comes across a soul he cares about among the routine cases, he faces a difficult choice: to act as experience and reason dictate, or to surrender to the call of his heart...
