Yuri Ozerov’s epic movie series “Liberation” is a heroic chronicle in five movies, recounting the most important battles of the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945. The films cover such events as the Battle of Kursk, where the largest tank battle in the entire history of the war took place, as well as the crossing of the Dnieper, the liberation of Belarus, and the capture of the Reichstag. Alongside real historical figures (Stalin, Zhukov, Vlasov, Hitler, and others), the movie features composite characters whose fates reflect the tragedy, pain, suffering, and losses endured by the wartime generation. The action abounds in battle scenes, which are continually interwoven with the activities behind the lines of both the Soviet and Nazi armies. The movie was filmed from 1967 to 1971 directly at the sites of the great battles. The final movie was filmed in war-ravaged Berlin.
