A young and striking woman, Svetlana, returns to Russia from Paris with her 10-year-old daughter Galya. She has fled her former French husband, who is trying to take her child away through the courts. Seeking to escape his pursuit, Svetlana moves into an old upscale building, where her neighbor turns out to be the renowned antiques dealer Andrei Kovalevsky. He is raising a son the same age as Galya. The children quickly hit it off, bringing their parents closer together. But soon, a series of misfortunes befalls the Kovalevsky family…
