Twenty years later, fate brings together former physics classmates Vladimir Skulsky and Vadim Tokmenev once again in the small town of Zhuravin. Their lives have turned out very differently: Skulsky quickly managed to adapt to all the changes in the country and became a top executive at the local nuclear power plant, while Tokmenev never succeeded at anything and will now work under the supervision of his old friend. Still, the two men have something in common: both Tokmenev and Skulsky raised their daughters—Vera and Rita—on their own. The girls attend high school and immediately become friends, but from the very first day Vera is somewhat jealous of Rita: it seems to her that everything comes too easily to her friend in life. This feeling will torment the girl for years; over time, girlish envy will turn into hatred and become a truly destructive force.
