Applicant Alexey Severtsev (Alexandrov) arrives from the Siberian backwoods to enroll in a Leningrad university, but the big city gives him a very unfriendly welcome. Soon, cunning fraudsters lure Alexey to a deserted spot, beat him up, and rob the young man. The applicant immediately turns to the police: the investigation into the attack and robbery is assigned to young Sergeant Nikolay Zakharov (Minin), who is still studying at the law faculty. With the participation of the more experienced Major Grigoryev (Krasko), Nikolay manages to pick up the trail of a large gang led by a cruel leader nicknamed «Prince» (Yankovsky). The young, inexperienced sergeant faces the task of neutralizing and arresting the gang members.
