The small provincial town of N-sk suddenly finds itself at the center of journalists’ and investigators’ attention. A few days ago, local fishermen discovered the body of a young woman, Alice Krotova, daughter of Governor Valentin Krotov, on the shore of a lake. Forensic experts found no signs of violence on the victim’s body, yet it is clear that this is a murder—and a highly unusual one.
To investigate the case, Oleg Nesterov, a specialist from the capital, arrives in N-sk. The first thing he does is inspect the crime scene and discovers a great many outsiders in the forest: role-players are preparing for their annual games based on the Karelian-Finnish epic. The group is led by a student named Vera. Brave and determined, she too senses that something strange is happening in the forest—just look at the ominous signs someone has been leaving on the stones.
Neither Nesterov nor Vera yet suspects that N-sk is home to more than just such harmless games: even members of the city administration are involved in some mysterious game, where the price of excitement may be one’s life.
