The famous 1971 Soviet comedy «12 Chairs» is one of the screen adaptations of the eponymous novel by Ilf and Petrov. The plot of this work, already familiar to everyone, tells the story of a pair of adventurers searching for a sitting-room set of 12 chairs against the backdrop of post-revolutionary Russia. One of them, Ippolit Matveyevich Vorobyaninov, the son-in-law of a once-wealthy countess, finds himself at the bedside of his dying mother-in-law, where he becomes witness to an incredible confession. It turns out that jewels worth a very large amount had once been hidden in one of the count’s chairs. All of the mother-in-law’s property is sent to auction after her death. Ippolit has a chance to buy back the entire set at once, but in his foolishness he drinks away the money, missing out on the chairs, which are dispersed across the country. He then meets a certain Ostap Bender, who claims to be the greatest thinker and schemer of all time.
