The Afghan campaign began on December 12, 1979. At that time, a narrow circle of the CPSU Central Committee Politburo gathered to discuss the situation in Afghanistan. After lengthy discussions, Leonid Brezhnev, Andrei Gromyko, Yuri Andropov, and Dmitry Ustinov made a momentous decision—to send Soviet troops into Afghanistan. This military operation became the USSR’s first and only one outside the Warsaw Pact countries. The campaign lasted ten years and became the longest, yet most «forgotten» war in the history of the Soviet Union.
How did the Afghan War unfold? How did Soviet society view the campaign? How did this decade of fighting change the USSR? What were the results of this military operation? We invite everyone interested in military history and wishing to learn more about the causes and consequences of the Afghan War to watch the informative documentary Series «Afghanistan» online. We wish you an enjoyable viewing.
