The cold autumn of 1943. The unceasing Battle of the Dnieper. The opposite bank of the river has long been firmly occupied by the Germans. The Red Army command sends two battalions to break through—this is a tactical maneuver intended to distract the enemy. The maneuver is extremely dangerous and risky, but necessary for the victory of the entire battle. The Russian soldiers are to be supported by artillery and air fire, without which they are almost helpless and doomed to certain death. The two combat battalions are ordered to hold out to the very end and under no circumstances retreat, so fire support is their only hope of salvation. However, the command unexpectedly changes the offensive plan completely, and both battalions are left to fend for themselves.
