After studying in the city, eighteen-year-old Nastya Pakhomova returns to her native village of Berezhki and falls in love with her childhood friend Matvey. But Nastya’s father does not want a poor man as his son-in-law. The lovers decide to run away to get married in church, but their plans are not meant to come true: Matvey’s father dies under tragic circumstances, and Nastya’s father is suspected of his death. Crushed by grief and thirsting for revenge, Matvey rejects his beloved. But this is not the end of their personal drama—it is only the beginning.
