Violet goes up to her mother’s office on Conscription Day. She is 20 years old and has spent her whole life preparing to become a scribe, like her father, but her mother, a general, orders her to join the Riders Quadrant. Her sister Mira begs their mother not to send fragile Violet to her death, but she remains adamant. Mira warns her to stay away from Xaden Riorson—the son of the executed leader of the rebellion, who killed their brother Brennan. Mira gives Violet a dragon-scale corset and rubber-soled boots.
