Summer 1914. Russia is living out its last peaceful days on the eve of World War I and the revolution. In the Cossack settlement of Mungalovsky, the young and dashing Cossack Roman tries to win the heart of the beautiful Dashutka. He has no money for the services of an expensive matchmaker, while Alyoshka, the son of a wealthy merchant, has the means and opportunities. Roman’s father refuses to help him, and Dashutka marries his rival. The Cossack suppresses his sorrow with everyday work around the house and in the fields. Soon, turning-point times arrive: Roman goes off to fight at the front and then returns to his native Cossack village, changed beyond recognition.
