The movie tells the story of the lives of the Russian intelligentsia, the Turbin family, during the Civil War and the revolution. The events take place in Kyiv in the winter of 1918–1919. Power in the city passes from the Hetmanate to the Directory and then to the Bolsheviks. The Turbins and their acquaintances must make their choice. Colonel Alexei Turbin and his brother Nikolai remain loyal to the White movement against all odds and bravely defend it, sparing no sacrifice. Their sister Elena’s husband, Vladimir Talberg, on the contrary, shamefully flees the city with the retreating German troops. In these troubled times, a somewhat strange and absurd man named Larion Surzhansky comes to visit the Turbins.
