This cinematic masterpiece by Alexander Mitta is still loved by audiences, just as it was many years ago. A disaster movie—that is how it might be described in modern terms. Back then, on the eve of the 1980s, the director simply made a movie about the difficult work of an aircraft crew. But this is not merely a narrative movie about the hardships of an airplane crew’s life. The picture consists of two episodes that are radically different from one another. In the first episode, we see the ordinary, everyday lives of the main characters. Only in the second episode do terrifying events unfold before the viewer. Yet the most difficult part remained behind the scenes: the filming itself was arduous. Originally, the picture had a different title, and the ending in the first version was different, but it was changed at Brezhnev’s request.
