Enthusiastic restorer Andrei Kalashnikov spared neither effort nor money to restore an old wooden mansion in the village of Kamyshovka. His work is interrupted by the house’s former owner, Vera Bakshayeva, who claims that the deal was illegal and that the mansion still belongs to her. Kalashnikov’s life’s work is under threat. After speaking with Bakshayeva, he loses consciousness, and when he comes to, he finds her corpse beside him. Andrei fears that, in a fit of rage, he attacked the woman and killed her while unconscious. He turns to his detective acquaintances—Makar Ilyushin and Sergei Babkin, who solve the most baffling cases—for help. Hardly have they begun their investigation when they notice the strange behavior and secrecy of Kamyshovka’s residents.
