The documentary travel series explores Russia’s unique craft traditions and shows how the ancient art of ancestors becomes part of modern culture.
The film crew travels deep into the country in search of living traditions that are still preserved in villages and small towns. The project opens up to viewers the world of clay and ceramics, then heads into the forest wilderness of the Trans-Volga region of Nizhny Novgorod — the birthplace of the famous Khokhloma craft. The plot then moves on to monumental metal and stonework, finally giving way to exquisite women’s art: textiles, the finest embroidery, and Vologda lace. The concluding episodes are devoted to exploring Sakhalin’s unique traditions of making clothing and household items from fish skin. On screen, viewers see the real lives of modern artisans, their hard, daily, and very beautiful work.
