Fate brings three different people together in a train carriage bound for Moscow. Each of them has their own reasons for going to the capital. Nastya Lapina, a young woman from the backwater town of Luza, takes a day off from her factory job to find her real father, whose existence she learned about only a couple of days ago. But Nastya has no time for sentimentality: she hopes that her father, the renowned aircraft designer Kovalev, will help free her mother Vera from prison. The woman is accused of embezzling a large amount of money, and the only way to save her is to return the same amount to the owners of the goods that disappeared from the factory warehouse.
Also travelling in the same carriage is doctor Igor Gritsenko, and his story is even more dramatic. His mother recently died: the woman became seriously ill after the tragic death of Igor’s father. He was a test pilot and, Igor is certain, died because of one man—the chief aircraft designer Kovalev. And although the latter has forgotten what happened, Igor will hold him accountable as soon as he arrives in Moscow.
Only Olya, Nastya’s compartment neighbor, is forced to travel to the capital not by difficult personal circumstances, but by a desire to improve her life—with the help of wealthy suitors, of whom, the girl is sure, Moscow has plenty.
