Mikhail Romm’s documentary movie «Ordinary Fascism», in which the director acted as narrator, was released in 1965 and received the «Golden Dove» award, as well as a prize at the 8th International Leipzig Documentary Film Festival.
The movie is a kind of study; essentially, it is an attempt to understand the origins of such a phenomenon as fascism. To this day, the picture remains the most powerful domestic anti-war and anti-fascist feed. It is a reflection on the nature and emergence of fascism, on the reasons why it could arise in Germany, which gave the world such cultural figures as Goethe and Mann. How could odious and poorly educated people, sweeping away everything in their treacherous path, come to power here? The movie uses materials from German archives, footage shot by Hitler’s personal photographer, and filming from concentration camps where thousands of people tortured and exterminated by the Nazis were held.
