1984. The USSR is drawn into a prolonged military conflict in Afghanistan. Perestroika is underway in the country, and the «Cold War» is in full swing. Against this backdrop unfolds the story of two lovers, Mitya and Anya, whom fate has separated. Anya’s parents—dissidents—were forced to emigrate to America with their daughter. Mitya remains in the USSR. His father is an intelligence general and an adviser to the General Secretary, who actively advocates for the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan. The United States wants the war to continue and the USSR to collapse, so they intend to discredit the general. Mitya and Anya’s love works to their advantage: the young people can be used in a high-stakes game. An operation called «Mukhabbat» is devised—an American CIA agent named Jane arranges a meeting between the unsuspecting lovers in Kabul. Finding themselves in Afghanistan, they end up at the epicenter of dangerous events, where the heroes are merely pawns in a complex game played by the intelligence services.
