1961. Viktor Khrustalyov is a young Soviet cinematographer with a dark stain on his record. The authorities believe he was involved in the accident that claimed the life of his screenwriter friend, Kostya Parshin. Yielding to pressure from management, Viktor works on the cheerful melodrama «The Girl and the Foreman»—hoping to obtain permission to make a movie based on Kostya’s screenplay. Together with the gifted director Yegor, he makes the movie, falls in love with the same girl, and faces tests of friendship and honesty.
