Zakhar, Rasimka, Yashka, and Vilen met at an orphanage. The boys ended up there in different ways. Zakhar’s mother abandoned him right after his birth, while Rasim’s parents were mauled to death by wolves. Vilen was the son of the orphanage director, the sensitive and caring Nadezhda Romanovna. Yasha grew up with an alcoholic father, and after his death, his mother Matryona was hired to work in the orphanage cafeteria.
Years later, the friends grew up, learned professions, and it seemed that their whole lives lay ahead of them. But the young heroes’ ordinary routines and plans for the future are shattered by the news of the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War. Zakhar, Rasim, Yakov, and Vilen find themselves in the midst of historical events where danger intertwines with courage, tragedy with love, and patriotism with betrayal.
