The communist Davydov arrives in the Cossack village of Gremyachy Log. His task is to begin collectivization in this godforsaken backwater. Davydov’s helpers in this difficult undertaking are Razmetnov, the chairman of the village council, and Makar Nagulnov, the secretary of the Party cell. Once they get to work, they encounter stubborn resistance from the wealthy peasants and, indeed, from all the other conservatively minded residents of the settlement. The ideological leader of the opponents of collectivization is the stubborn yesaul Polovtsev. He is secretly supported by Yakov Lukich Ostrovnov, who has ingratiated himself with the Bolsheviks.
