The story takes place in a small coastal village whose main source of income comes from fishing. A young, promising doctor from Moscow, Maksim Kuzovlev, arrives to live and work there. Almost at the same time, Pyotr Grabov, an ordinary young man who once left the village for military service, returns to the settlement. He served for several years in Chechnya and now hopes to get a decent job back home thanks to his uncle, the chairman of the collective farm. In another life, they might have become good friends, but in this one, the stumbling block between them is the pretty nurse Anya, with whom both young men fall in love.
