1943, at the height of the Great Patriotic War. SMERSH counterintelligence agent Alexey Kravtsov is assigned to infiltrate the enemy camp. He must find a traitor who controls the German spy network.
But after reaching the Nazis’ rear lines, the experienced intelligence officer realizes that the mission has failed and his identity is about to be exposed. Unable to come up with a new cover story, Kravtsov takes a desperate step: he openly declares that he works for SMERSH and has supposedly decided to defect to the Germans.
The gamble results in a series of tragedies: the intelligence officer is accused of treason, and the woman he loves finds herself in great danger. However, Alexey is determined to complete his assignment despite the new risks.
