The crimes occur at night near the Obvodny Canal, in the very heart of the city. The killer leaves unusual symbols drawn in charcoal next to his victims. Major Chubin, who is investigating the case, has encountered occult murders before—several years earlier, he tried to expose a religious sect, but the mission failed and he himself nearly died. Now Chubin lives with a fear of the dark and guilt over a killing he committed by accident. His partner is Captain Fyodorov, a former beat cop who is in love with his best friend's wife.
