A multi-part Soviet movie about life in a pre-revolutionary Siberian village, based on Georgy Markov’s novel of the same name. Superb acting, high-quality cinematography, and unconventional plot decisions made the movie so successful at the time that a sequel was soon made—the Series «Salt of the Earth».
The plot is based on the story of the simple Siberian Strogoff family of beekeepers, shown over the course of three generations. Through the life and fate of this peasant family, the movie’s creators vividly and expressively portray the life of the entire Siberian region during the greatest historical events: the Revolution of 1905, the Russo-Japanese War, the October Revolution, and the Civil War. The novel’s main character, Matvey, follows a difficult path in life from a simple peasant beekeeper to the commander of a partisan detachment.
