In the mid-1970s, a terrible tragedy struck the family in which Slava and Seryozha were growing up: their father was killed in a car accident, and their mother, driven mad by grief, left home. The boys were sent to an orphanage, and a few years later, seven-year-old Seryozha was adopted by a well-off family that had recently lost a child. Slava was used to spending all his time with his younger brother, sharing the sorrows and joys of orphanage life with him, and could not come to terms with the fact that Seryozha had begun a new life.
