At the center of the plot is the family of miner Pyotr Zhuravlyov. Together with his wife Lyuda, he has three grown-up children. Their eldest son, Fyodor, works at the mine with his father and is preparing to propose to his girlfriend. Their daughter Toma’s fate did not turn out very well: she gave birth to a son by Vanya, a layabout and gambler, and now lives with the baby at her parents’ home. Pyotr’s youngest daughter, Polina, is in love with boxer Grisha and dreams of a bright future with him. However, life did not spare the Zhuravlyovs during the difficult 1990s.
