In Search of the Holy City

Chersonesus is an archaeological phenomenon whose state of preservation allows it to be called “the Russian Pompeii.” For believers, it is a sacred spot where, according to chronicles, the Orthodox faith originated. Despite two centuries of excavations, only a third of the ancient city’s territory has been studied.

Veronika Ivashchenko, host of the educational project, will delve into archives and meet with scholars to reconstruct the life of Chersonesus in antiquity and the Middle Ages, when the city served as Byzantium’s northern stronghold, a center of culture, and a conduit of the Christian faith.
