In a car crash, an entire group of children is killed, except for Alice, the daughter of music teacher Masha, whose body is never found. Unable to accept the loss, Masha destroys her former life: she leaves her husband Oleg, quits her job, and withdraws into herself. Eight years later, it turns out that Alice is alive. After the accident, she was raised by a childless family. Now, following the death of her adoptive mother, the teenage pianist returns to Masha. But time has changed everyone: Masha has lost her ear for music, while Oleg, now with a new family, is desperate to get his daughter back. Fyodor, a piano teacher helping Alice prepare for admission to the Conservatory, becomes entwined in their lives. Feelings flare up between him and Masha. But Oleg refuses to back down, and Masha must choose between her own happiness and a mother’s love.
