A classic novel about a Russian intellectual who has lost his spot in post-revolutionary reality. His envy of the people of the new era becomes a personal drama and a symbol of inexorable change.
Nikolai Kavalerov feels like a superfluous man in a world where dreamers no longer have their former spot. The new reality belongs to energetic pragmatists who know how to set goals and achieve results. Kavalerov, meanwhile, is left with resentment, self-irony, and a painful sense of his own uselessness. Through his inner turmoil, Yuri Olesha creates a poignant portrait of changing eras and the fate of the intelligentsia after the revolution.
