While trying to restore justice, former frontline soldier and investigator Sergei Gastev nearly ends up behind bars. He leaves investigative work and begins teaching Roman law at a university. Sergei is dating Komsomol activist Lyudmila Mishina, but they have to keep their romance secret. When the town is shaken by a series of brazen crimes, Gastev is once again enlisted to fight crime. Sergei is assigned a young rural district police officer, Ilya Ropnya, to assist him. As they try to solve one crime, the partners inadvertently pick up the trail of another—a massive financial fraud scheme connected to Stalin’s 70th birthday.
