Mathematics professor Olga Barkovskaya uses her computational and analytical abilities to unravel complex crimes. When unknown assailants kill and rob her fellow mathematician, Olga takes on the investigation and gradually picks up the killer’s trail.
Renowned mathematician Lungin is murdered in a hotel room, and an expensive gemstone is stolen from his safe. Four students whom Lungin had told about the code to the safe, connected with Pythagoras, come under suspicion. While senior investigator Kartashova examines the motives and alibis of Andrei, Marina, Oleg, and Stas, Barkovskaya studies and analyzes the code. She concludes that the situation is far from as obvious as it may seem.
