Colonel Nikolai Ustyuzhanin is an experienced military counterintelligence officer, a virtuoso with firearms and a master of hand-to-hand combat, accustomed to placing his duty above his own safety. During one of the operations in which he took part, a tragic failure occurred: an agent was killed. Ustyuzhanin is convinced that the operation was compromised by an information leak—there is a traitor in the department. However, instead of launching an investigation, he is suspended from duty until the review is completed. To expose the culprit, the colonel devises a risky plan: he travels to a remote village where his former fellow serviceman, the head of a border district, lives. There, Ustyuzhanin takes a job as the manager of a forestry enterprise, expecting that the suspected «mole», upon learning of his whereabouts, will try to eliminate the witness. However, Nikolai’s new job proves to involve trials no less dangerous than his previous service.
