The orphan Nadezhda was raised by her grandfather, a master painter of clay pots. The girl grew up in a small village in the Southern Urals and fell in love with her neighbor Pavel. The young couple dream of a future together, but Pasha’s parents send him to Moscow—away from an “unsuitable” daughter-in-law and in pursuit of a “wealthy life.” After her grandfather’s death, Nadya is left alone, decides to find Pavel, and follows him to the capital.
