An ordinary Moscow courtyard. Two worlds coexist side by side here—the locals and the newcomers—crossing paths only when the former go to work and see the latter sweeping the streets. Then suddenly, news of a horrific crime shatters the courtyard’s silence. The main suspect is a Tajik janitor.
The incident gives no peace to two neighbors. Vladimir Kalyony is a retired police officer who had to leave the work of his life because of an injury. He languishes from inactivity and loneliness, which leads him to drink heavily. A woman named Mavlyuda came to Moscow from Uzbekistan in search of her husband and is temporarily working as a janitor. Kalyony decides to conduct his own investigation into the murder, while Mavlyuda, who knows perfectly well everything that goes on in the courtyard, decides to help him. Despite their differing views on life and mentalities, these unusual Holmes and Watson make an excellent team, solve any case, and earn the trust of their neighbors.
