His Maid and Her Story

Moscow, 19th century: an era of lavish balls, aristocratic intrigues, and strict rules. Count Nikolai Sheremetev, a coveted bachelor returning from war, must marry within a year—or lose his inheritance. Anna Averina, a noblewoman from an impoverished family, takes a desperate step: she comes to the count to beg him to forgive her father’s debts. But Sheremetev is not inclined toward mercy—he offers her a bargain: one year of service at his estate in exchange for saving her family. Finding herself among the candidates for the count’s hand, Anna is forced to conceal her origins.
