The events of the detective Series "Caviar" unfold in 1979 in the small port city of Yuzhnomorsk, where investigator Mikhail Fedorov dies under unclear circumstances. The murdered man’s friend and colleague, Alexander Kostenko, takes on the investigation and determines that Fedorov’s death was not accidental—it was murder. No sooner does Kostenko begin pursuing this lead than he encounters strange inertia from his immediate superiors; moreover, he is removed from the case. Determined Alexander does not give up and flies to Moscow to enlist the support of the Prosecutor General. Before he even boards the plane, Kostenko witnesses smuggling at the airport. Alexander personally detains a currency courier, who turns out to be a high-ranking official from the Ministry of Fisheries. Kostenko does not yet know that this act has turned very influential people against him. The incorruptible investigator Kostenko becomes a target for high-ranking fraudsters, while meanwhile black caviar finds its way into a batch of canned fish at one of the stores in Yuzhnomorsk.
