The first mission entrusted to the recruits ends in a disastrous failure: the headstrong Leonid, who was supposed to provide cover for the ground-attack aircraft, shows excessive initiative, launches an attack, and as a result, the ground-attack aircraft are tragically destroyed. The culprits are sent to the division to be court-martialed and shot. But the commander of the ground-attack squadron himself stands up for Leonid and Boris: the young men return to duty as fighter-attack pilots to fight for victory.
