At the center of the plot of this two-part movie are two childhood friends, Ira and Masha. Ira works as a waitress, while Masha is a florist. Both are pretty young women, but neither has had much luck in their personal lives. Masha cannot find a man with serious intentions, while Ira is trapped in an abusive relationship with her jealous alcoholic boyfriend, Tolya. One day, Masha saves her friend from another beating and inadvertently kills Tolya. Investigator Prokofyev takes on the case and immediately suspects Ira, but unexpectedly falls in love with her. Masha, tormented by guilt, begins helping the mother of her victim and, through this, meets a decent architect named Nikolai. However, she has to put their relationship on hold so that a good man does not tie his life to a murderer.
