The main character, Lika, has spent her entire life being led by others, submitting to the will of more influential and powerful people. Even now, her life is controlled by her wealthy father, while her domineering husband also seeks to influence his wife.
Until a certain point, this did not bother Lika at all. She thought that others knew better how to act in any given situation. Her daughter Zhenya is an example of this: thanks to her father’s constant supervision, she has achieved great success in chess. But her beloved son Volodya, whose upbringing was largely handled by Lika herself, has grown up to be a slacker. Her strict father is convinced that he could easily go down the wrong path and get himself into a lot of trouble. And that is exactly what happens when Lika’s father is mysteriously murdered and all suspicion falls on Volodya. Unlike the rest of the family, Lika does not believe her son is guilty and wants to get to the bottom of this complicated and tangled story herself.
