The main character, Svetlana, is almost forty years old. In her youth, she was unable to complete medical school, and so now she is forced to work as a caregiver. She lives in a one-room apartment with her 18-year-old daughter, whose personal life is just beginning. One day, Svetlana discovers that she is pregnant. The news shocks the child’s father—a married man with whom Svetlana had a brief affair. Svetlana’s daughter is not happy about the news either, as she has recently invited her beloved to move into her mother’s apartment. And Svetlana herself is not sure whether she is ready to become a mother again. To sort herself out, Svetlana goes to visit her sister in another city. However, she is unable to run away from her problems, as new difficulties await her there as well—but also a new love.
