The events of the Series begin when a young woman named Marina Mukhina is killed by a car. Before her death, she mentions a man in a mask and butterflies. At first glance, her words seem like ordinary deathbed delirium, but Levin quickly realizes that she was talking about a maniac who has been sought since last winter.
