The story takes place in 1942 in a northern port on the Taimyr Peninsula, where a Soviet transit base is located. Any day now, a convoy of ships from American allies carrying military and food aid is due to pass through here. At the same time, the port serves as a transit point for several thousand prisoners being sent into exile, to phosphate mines. It is a cruel school of survival, where the strongest prevail, where cold, hunger, and unbearable living conditions strip people of everything human.
Meanwhile, an enemy resident agent disguised as one of “their own” has appeared in the port, coordinating the actions of German submarines. Moscow, in turn, sends an experienced NKVD officer named Krotky to the spot, tasked with finding and neutralizing the saboteur.
