The plot describes the historical fact of Sophia Augusta Fredericka of Anhalt-Zerbst’s arrival in Russia in 1744; she would later become the wife of Peter III—Catherine II. Her secret journey from the small Prussian town of Zerbst was arranged by the reigning Empress Elizabeth Petrovna. She had no children of her own, and therefore decided to pass the throne on to her nephew, Karl Peter Ulrich, who was given the name Pyotr Fyodorovich in Russia.
