In the late 1950s, 18-year-old Tatyana Meshcherskaya (Angelina Poplavskaya) arrives in Moscow from Kazakhstan. After her mother’s death when she was seven, she was sent to an orphanage. Now the young woman hopes to start a new life in the capital. Her mother left her with striking looks, a precious brooch, and a letter to her father. Tanya’s father turns out to be the respected academician Vikenty Ryabinsky (Vladislav Vetrov), who had no idea he had an illegitimate daughter.
